2015 Fishing Reports

MAY 1, 2015 - Captain James Schlegel

A great start to the fishing season here in Sheboygan. The weather couldn’t have cooperated better. We had some luck right outside the Sheboygan harbor using a variety of stick baits trolled behind our planner boards. We caught lake trout, brown trout and salmon. We also hooked several on stinger spoons on our diver rods. Unfortunately we only landed about half the fish we hooked, but had a good time on a nice spring day here in Sheboygan.

Same story as yesterday. Caught one fish shy of our limit fishing right outside the Sheboygan harbor. Once again a nice variety of fish consisting of lake trout, brown trout and kings. The larger king went about 14 pounds. Best luck was our diver rod with a silver and blue stinger spoon. Also some good action on our planner boards trolling diving stick baits. Water temperature was in the lower fifties. Looking forward to getting back on the water all this week.

Still fishing out in front of the Sheboygan harbor. I've been on the water the past several days and catching a variety of brown trout, lake trout and king salmon. Water temperatures are rising but very slowly from the upper forties to low fifties depending on the river flow. Also marking some good schools of alewives in the area. Photo and video are from Friday mornings trip. Join our crew Tuesday evening along the riverfront for the annual "Ride a Charter Boat Day". Club member charter captains will be providing free boat rides beginning at 6:00 pm. The Sheboygan Area Great Lakes Sport Fishermen's club will also be providing samples of their favorite grilled salmon recipes and smoke fish.

I've been on the water every day this month and the local fishing continues to improve. We are now fishing in 70 to 100 feet of water just inside the commercial fishing nets. A good number of rainbows are now being caught. Yesterday we landed a 13.48 pound rainbow. Today we went 10 for 20 catching all rainbows and one lake trout. Every fish was taken on the planner boards. Only one downrigger bite all afternoon. Surface water temperatures are now in the lower fifties.

After a forecast of rain all day, it was a rather nice day on the water with a group of returning guests. We fished a four boat group south of town in 60 to 100 feet of water. A variety of Lake Trout, Kings and Rainbows were caught. The majority of the fish were Lake Trout today with the largest just a bit under 16 pounds. Water temps have warmed up to the lower 50's at the surface.

Offshore fishing has been good for rainbow trout, lake trout and some coho and king salmon. Here is a nice catch of some rainbow trout caught this morning out in 150 feet of water. Aboard our boat this morning was Andy Hron of the Kettle Moraine state fish hatchery that specializes in raising the majority of rainbows released into Lake Michigan. It was a special day for him and his group to see first hand what a great sport fishery we have right here in Sheboygan. As our lake water warms up, this type of fishing should improve week by week.

I've been on the water every day now for over a week, and a pattern is now developing. Early morning and evening are good fishing 70 to 100 feet of water, during the mid day we head further offshore for rainbow and lake trout. The below photo is the morning trip on the 4th of July of all trout.

Finally some west winds here in Sheboygan. The warmer surface water is moving further offshore, while the cooler water is along our shoreline is bringing the fish right to our doorstep. We have been fishing right off the lighthouse catching some good sized king salmon. Company outings are our specialty and we can accommodate larger groups with special requests such as today's afternoon party from the Kohler Company.

Big king salmon are now being caught daily. Consistent west winds are keeping the cold water close to our shoreline. The larger king salmon are right outside the Sheboygan harbor. This is the time to get out on the water and hook one of these monsters. We have also had some luck catching rainbows and some lake trout. Monday morning we hooked four kings all at the same time and landed all four. This is what we've been waiting for all year, and with west winds all week long the fishing forecast looks good.
